A common physics question turned philosophical goes as follows: If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound? I'm sure you've heard it before and I think the Wikipedia page does a good enough job explaining it, so that's not what I'll go into today. But I was thinking about it recently and I thought of a follow up question: If you come upon a fallen tree, did it ever stand? As I write this, I struggle to coherently put the thoughts together, so we'll see where this post goes.
